"Building Skills - Caring for Someone Living with Dementia"
Using A Positive Approach to Care by Teepa Snow
Building Skills: Caring for Someone Living with Dementia is a hands-on learning experience designed to improve communication and interaction skills between people living with dementia and their caregivers. This is accomplished by first building up foundational knowledge of dementia, then layering that knowledge with the use of intentional skills learned later in the workshop.
This workshop takes a unique perspective by honing in on changes to the sensory systems as dementia progresses. Learners will participate in a variety of simulation activities that allow for deeper understanding of how a person living with dementia experiences the world. Learners will then use these experiences as a reference for understanding why a person living with dementia can have a more positive experience when approached with intentional use of communication techniques such as Positive Physical Approach™ and Hand under Hand™.
The workshop will conclude with an introduction to Teepa Snow’s GEMS ™ classification model. Through the lens of the GEMS ™ model, we are able to see that given the right care at the right time in the right setting, anyone can shine. The GEMS ™ model gives us a way to re-frame our thinking from what the person lost, to what skills and strengths remain. The aim of this workshop is to refresh our knowledge of dementia and highlight our ability to view people living with dementia holistically and thoughtfully throughout the progression of the disease. Learners will sharpen their own skills, and will learn how to pass these skills on to family members as well.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this presentation, learners will be able to:
1. Discuss the impact of changing sensory awareness and processing as dementia progresses.
2. Apply Positive Physical Approach™ (PPA) and Hand Under Hand™ (HUH) in everyday situations.
3. Develop observational skills necessary to recognize and address unmet emotional and physical needs.
4. Use the GEMS™ to facilitate positive, supportive communication between the caregiver and the person being cared for.
