“Engaging Students in Language-Based Literacy Services: An Interprofessional Collaborative Approach”
Abstract:
For nearly two decades, ASHA has officially recognized assessment and treatment of language based literacy deficits as duties that fall within the school-based SLP's scope of practice, yet recent surveys indicate that the majority of these SLPs are not engaged in literacy interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss methods to increase language-literacy interventions through engaging themes and novel service-delivery models. Prevention (Tier 1), remediation (Tier 2), and intervention (Tier 3) models will be discussed. These models focus on morphological awareness strategies to improve vocabulary knowledge, spelling, decoding, and text comprehension abilities. These service delivery models are also aligned with school-based standards and initiatives, such as the Common Core State Standards, Response-to-Intervention, and Interprofessional Practice. Lastly, all models center on themes (e.g., producing comic books, creating fictional cities) that have proven to be very engaging and motivating for students in the upper elementary through secondary school grade levels.
Learning Objectives: After participating in the presentation, attendees will be able to:
1. Engage in language-based literacy services at Tiers 1, 2, and 3.
2. Design motivating and engaging language-based literacy services.
3. Design contextualized language-based literacy services that align with state and local standards.
