Abstract:
People who stutter often experience more than just speech disruptions—their communication challenges can lead to social anxiety, avoidance behaviors, and reduced confidence. While traditional stuttering therapy has focused primarily on fluency techniques, addressing the emotional impact of stuttering is equally critical for long-term success. This talk introduces a trauma-informed approach to stuttering therapy, helping speech-language pathologists (SLPs) recognize, validate, and reduce social anxiety while fostering confidence and communicative freedom. Participants will explore how Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) can help regulate the nervous system, reduce speaking-related anxiety, and support emotional resilience. While this session does not provide EFT training, attendees will learn about its potential applications in stuttering therapy and gain complimentary access to a series of guided EFT tapping videos they can share with clients.
