About the Webinar:

This class will focus on creating and implementing low-tech communication systems for emerging communicators in and out of the classroom setting. The class will begin with a brief review of what is augmentative alternative communication (AAC). It will provide examples of no-tech, low-tech, mid-tech, and high-tech AAC systems. Participants will then learn the difference between a communication system and a classroom support. Designing and implementing a low-tech system will then be discussed. Participants will learn how to create low-tech communication systems and classroom supports using the PASS software.

This program will be recorded for later viewing up to 14 days following the workshop. WSLHA will send out a link to the recording after the live session.

  2. Describe the difference between a communication system and a classroom support.

  3. Name two considerations when selecting vocabulary for a low-tech communication system.

About the Speaker:

Shari Sayan, M.S. CCC-SLP

Sharí has been working as an SLP and special educator for over 15 years. Her passion for speech pathology and special education began as a nanny for a little girl with cerebral palsy. In the early 2000s she started attending the Building Bridges Camp as a language facilitator and met consultants for various communication device companies and ultimately felt they had the most amazing position providing guidance to parents, professionals and clients in their search for easier access to technology and communication. In 2005, Sharí had her first experience as a classroom teacher for children who use AAC as their primary communication method. This led her to fall in love with AAC further and eventually begin as an evaluator. When her oldest child came along and needed AAC, Sharí became the area consultant. Her middle child is a part-time AAC user and gestalt language processor (GLP).
