Cognitive-Communication Skills in Bilingual Persons with Dementia

Advancements in healthcare have resulted in both increased awareness and early identification of the symptoms of dementia. The session will address cognitive skills and impairment in bilingual adults with dementia. Furthermore, it will highlight the differences between dementia presentation in monolingual and bilingual persons and provide a detailed distinction of discourse abilities in healthy bilingual older adults and persons with dementia using case studies. Focus will be paid to discourse elicitation and sampling methods and consideration of cultural aspects. A case study will also highlight the discourse impairments in L1 and L2. Clinical implications will be discussed as they relate to the availability of services for bilingual patients, and the relevance of bilingual assessment in mild dementia will be discussed.
