Ethical Guidelines for Speech-Language Pathologists Practicing in Washington State

Location: Live virtual via Zoom platform or viewing a recording available for two weeks after the event date (as soon as the recording is available on Thursday, March 11, 2026 through Wednesday March 25, 2026). ASHA CEUs and OSPI Clock Hours are available for attending or watching the entire event.

Refunds:  Cancellations made at least 3 days before the event will receive a full refund, minus a $3 processing fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this deadline.

Satisfactory Completion: In order to be reported for ASHA CEUs, OSPI Clock Hours, and receive a WSLHA course Certificate of Attendance, each registrant MUST register, attend or attest to viewing the entire course session, and complete the learner outcome assessment and course evaluation within two weeks of the course.

Presenter: Deirdre Curle, Ph.D

Biography: 

Deirdre Curle, Ph.D., received her M.S. in Communication Disorders from the University of New Mexico and her PhD in Special Education from the University of British Columbia. She has practiced as an SLP in clinical and educational settings with children and adults for 30 years. Deirdre has been actively involved with WSLHA since 2010 and has served on the board from 2021-2025. Deirdre currently works for the outreach team of the Washington Center for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Youth (CDHY) and teaches in the Deaf Education program at the University of British Columbia.      

Abstract:  This course will educate speech-language pathologists across settings (clinical, educational or private practice) about the existing codes of professional conduct in the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and how they align or differ from the 2023 ASHA Code of Ethics.

Agenda:

This course reviews professional conduct requirements for speech-language pathologists under the RCW and WAC, comparing them with the 2023 ASHA Code of Ethics.  Updated from the original 2021 presentation, it reflects current Washington State laws and addresses emerging ethical issues, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

6:00 – 6:05pm (5 minutes) Introduction

6:05 – 6:15pm (10 minutes) Terminology and Principles of Ethics

6:15 – 7:45pm (30 minutes) Ethical Issues and Codes of Conduct for WA SLPs

7:45 – 8:00pm (15 minutes) Question & Answer

Instructor Disclosures: Deirdre served on the WSLHA Board from 2020-25 and is currently president of the board for the new 501(c)3 WSLHA Foundation. In addition, she is a former Washington (WA) public schools employee, a current WA state employee, an ASHA member, and a WSLHA member. OSPI Clock Hours – 2.0 hours. OSPI clock hours available through ESD 113 by registering at https://www.pdenroller.org/ prior to the event from ESD113.  Fees may apply. 

ASHA CEUs must be purchased separately and in addition to the course registration fee prior to the event.  OSPI clock hours must be purchased separately prior to the event from the ESD 113. You still must register and pay for the course through WSLHA.
