About the Webinar:
Have you ever used a test with your client and wondered whether it was appropriate given their linguistic background? — if so, this session is for you!
Students, SLPAs, Associate Members, SLP CFs, SLPs/AuDs, and Life Members: Please join us for this informative and useful webinar presented by Dr. Maria Kapantzoglou, Associate Professor at Portland State University.
In this webinar, Dr. Kapantzoglou will equip attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of language assessment to ensure more accurate and equitable evaluations for multilingual and multicultural clients. With over- and under-representation of bilinguals in special education, SLPs need to critically assess language tests to avoid biased interpretations. Key factors contributing to misdiagnosis include the inadequacy of age as a predictor of language level and challenges with establishing norms, which might lead to inaccurate comparisons and biased test score interpretations. During the session, Dr. Kapantzoglou will provide specific examples that will illustrate how bias can manifest at different stages of test development and administration. Remedies for minimizing bias will also be explored, drawing from existing studies. She will also present three essential steps that clinicians can use to critically evaluate the appropriateness of a test for a particular client.

Identify potential sources of bias in language assessments used for diagnostic purposes.
