ASHA on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Presenter: Barbara Rodriguez, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

The presentation ASHA on DEI will focus on the Association’s Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) and OMA’s work in support of Strategic Objectives 6 and 8. There will also be emphasis on OMA’s extensive resources on ethics and diversity, equity, and inclusion, cultural competence, bi/multilingualism, gender diversity, and linguistic diversity. ASHA’s recruitment and retention programs will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation:

  1. Participants will recall the Office of Multicultural Affairs’ contributions to the Strategic Objectives 6 and 8.

  2. Participants will identify Office of Multicultural Affairs’ resources on a variety of DEI topics, including ethics and DEI, cultural competence, bi/multilingualism, gender & linguistic diversity, and recruitment and retention in CSD.

  3. Participants will be able to state where to find the online tool -- ASHA Evidence Maps: Cultural and Linguistic Diversity – designed to assist clinicians with making evidence-based decisions.

Barbara Rodriguez, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association’s Board of Directors and holds the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs in Speech-Language Pathology. Dr. Rodriguez is a professor in Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of New Mexico, and she is presently the University’s Senior Vice Provost. Dr. Rodriguez’s research focuses on bilingual language acquisition and assessment protocols for young English-Spanish speaking children. Barbara holds ASHA’s Certificate of Clinical Competence. She received a master’s degree in SLP from the University of New Mexico and doctorate in SLP from the University of Washington.

WSLHA charges a processing fee of $5.00 for ASHA CEUs ($7.00 non-members) and $5.00 for clock hours payable prior to the workshop.
