Building Social Skills and Competencies with AAC for Pediatrics Learners

Cost: Member - $35 | Non-Member - $50

About the Event:

Augmentative and Alternative communication (AAC) includes a variety of communication methods to support and supplement communication. These methods may include iPads with communication apps, low-tech communication boards, or high-tech devices with eye gaze or switch access. AAC success has been defined by increasing skills in different competencies: operational, functional/social, linguistic, strategic, and emotional competency (Blackstone & Wilkins, 2009; Light el. al., 2003). The aim of this online workshop is to provide clinicians with strategies to support social skills through the framework of the different AAC competencies. The presenter will discuss each competency and how supporting social skills can be applied through each section to identify goals for increased independence with AAC. Attendees are encouraged to participate through active conversations, activities, and online polls (e.g., Poll-Everywhere). This presentation will be conducted with respect from a neurodiversity lens, inclusion, and considerations for culturally-linguistically diverse populations.

Presenter: James Engracia, M.S., CCC-SLP

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will recall different AAC competencies to support successful use of AAC.
