Abstract:
A comprehensive evaluation of pediatric dysphagia includes one or all of the following assessments: clinical swallowing evaluation (CSE), video fluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), and diagnostic treatment. Interpreting the complex information collected during these assessments and forming a treatment plan that is functional during the home program can be challenging. This presentation will provide a review of 2 case studies to demonstrate the nuance of evaluation and treatment of complex patients with pediatric dysphagia. We will review the purpose of instrumental evaluations, the value of the initial clinical swallow evaluation, and discuss ideas for an inclusive plan of care.
Learning Objectives:Participants will be able to
Describe the key elements of clinical and instrumental swallowing evaluations.
State the implication(s) of the reviewed feeding and swallowing impairments on safe oral feeding.
Explain the rationale for selecting feeding/diet recommendations based upon the patients swallowing pathophysiology.
Develop functional and individualized short- and long-term treatment objectives based upon a comprehensive feeding and swallowing evaluation
