SLP Assessment and Treatment for Children & Adolescents with Traumatic Brain Injury in the Outpatient Setting Part 1

WSLHA is offering a two part series on April 15th and April 22nd regarding assessment and treatment of TBI in children and adolescents. Please join us for one or both sessions!

Assessment Part 1

Date: April 15, 2021

Time: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Abstract:

This short course focuses on effective outpatient SLP assessment of children and adolescents with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI), with an emphasis on cognitive-communication skills.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Identify cognitive and communication skills that are most vulnerable following TBI.

2. Identify unique challenges of assessing children and adolescents with TBI (particularly as compared to assessing children with developmental disorders),

3. Evaluate the effectiveness of standardized assessment measures for use with individuals with TBI.

4. Select appropriate formal and informal assessment measures that can identify and clarify deficits in individuals with TBI.

5. Define expected trajectory and timing of recovery of deficits following TBI and use this to better inform timing and nature of assessment practices.


Treatment Part 2

Abstract:

This short course focuses on effective outpatient SLP treatment of children and adolescents with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI), with an emphasis on cognitive-communication skills and cognitive rehabilitation.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Evaluate similarities and differences between skill-building and compensatory cognitive strategy training.

2. Define the SLP’s role in providing recommendations for parents, caregivers and school staff in and the importance of this communication and involvement in TBI recovery.

3. Evaluate important differences in treatment considerations for individuals with mild vs. moderate vs. severe levels of impairment.

4. Identify evidence-based treatments for supporting various domains of cognitive functioning (e.g., attention, memory, executive functions)

5. Identify unique considerations in treating difficulties with communication following TBI.

Brenna Murray, MA, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Her current role is as an outpatient clinician on the neurorehabilitation team, assessing and treating children and adolescents who have a history of acquired brain injury. She is also a member of the multi-disciplinary Brain, Language and Cognition (BLC) Clinic and developed the “Return-to-Learn” teen cognitive rehabilitation group at Seattle Children’s. Earlier in her career, she specialized in assessing and treating children and adolescents who had developmental language-based learning difficulties. Brenna received a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Neuroscience and Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis in 2009 and a master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011.

Disclosures: Financial: The presenter receives a salary from Seattle Children’s Hospital. There are no other financial conflicts of interest to disclose. Non-Financial: She serve as a consultant for the TOPS (Teen Online Problem Solving) program (developed by psychologist Dr. Shari Wade), helping to modify the program such that it could also be delivered for SLP’s. However she receives no compensation for this work. She has also served as a consultant for the BEST (Brain Education Strategies Technology) suite of apps, helping to modify the existing adult-oriented apps such that they could also be used by youth with brain injuries. However, she does not receive compensation for this work.

These programs will be recorded for later viewing within a 14-day period of time following each workshop. WSLHA will send out a link to the recording after the live session.

This course is offered for up to 0.30 ASHA CEUs, (Intermediate level, Professional area).

OSPI Clock Hours - up to 3 hours will be offered

WSLHA charges a processing fee of $5.00 for ASHA CEUs ($7.00 non-members) and $5.00 for clock hours payable prior to the workshop.

Credits must be purchased prior to the program. Any requests for credits after the date of each workshop will be denied.
