Current Ethical Issues in Speech Language Pathology Webinar

About the Event:

Speech-language pathologists frequently face ethical issues, decisions, and dilemmas. This session will describe ethical issues often faced in clinical practice as well as decision-making models and strategies to make ethical decisions. An analysis of the 2023 code of ethics put forth by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association will be used to support the ethical decision-making process. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify recent changes to the 2023 ASHA Code of Ethics.

  2. Participants will describe at least three strategies to use when making ethical decisions.

  3. Participants will apply and describe ethical decision-making strategies to provided case studies.

About the Presenters:

Klaire Brumbaugh, ClinScD, CCC-SLP

Klaire is the graduation program director at Fontbonne University. In addition, she is the director of clinical education and assistant professor at Fontbonne University-Kansas City. Klaire received her Bachelor and Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Kansas State University prior to completing the clinical doctorate in speech-language pathology from Rocky Mountain University. Currently, Klaire is completing a doctorate in education from Fontbonne University. Klaire’s research and professional interests focus in the areas of speech sound disorders and professional issues such as ethics and supervision.

Nikki Gaylord, EdD, CScD, CCC-SLP

Dr. J. Nikki Gaylord is an assistant professor at Murray State University in the Center for Communication Disorders. Dr. Gaylord has been a practicing speech-language pathologist for 24 years. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southeast Missouri State University. She completed a doctorate of clinical science in speech-language pathology in 2019 from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and a doctorate of education in P-20 leadership from Murray State University in 2022. Dr. Gaylord’s current research interests include exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction in athletes, exercise-induced dyspnea, voice disorders, and ethics and diversity in speech-language pathology.
