Brave New World: Presenting Effective Teletherapy for Children with ASD

Abstract:
Teletherapy for many children on the autism spectrum is an incredibly challenging endeavor. Significant difficulties with sustained attention, sensory regulation, visuospatial skills, and other domains can make teletherapy sessions rife with inconsistency and difficulties. This presentation will explore the various components of teletherapy for children on the autism spectrum and offer therapists helpful resources, tools, and suggestions for best approaching teletherapy sessions with this amazing and essential population. This presenter believes in using a three-pronged approach involving Technological Success, Parent Supports and Engaging Therapy Materials will best provide a beneficial framework for approaching teletherapy sessions with children who have autism.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this webinar participants will be able to:
1. State three benefits of teletherapy for students with ASD and become familiar with telecommunication programs.
2. Discuss three drawbacks of teletherapy for students with ASD and how to mitigate these disadvantages
3. Report three ways to successfully incorporate parents into the teletherapy process
4. Identify minimum of five online resources, which can be utilized during teletherapy sessions
John Williamson, M.S., CCC-SLP, received his master’s degree in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology from Northern Arizona University. He is the owner of the Social Skills Laboratory PLLC. He recently converted his practice to a fully telehealth model and has enjoyed learning and growing within this new therapy medium. Prior to opening his own practice John worked at Lakeside Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment (now I-CAN) and Children’s Institute for Learning Differences (CHILD).
