Orofacial Myology: The Missing Link to the Speech-Language Pathologist’s Tool Box
Date: November 9, 2020
Time: 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Location: Online via Zoom
Presenter: Nancy Magar, MA, CCC-SLP, COM
Abstract:
This presentation will provide information of how orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) can affect patients on an SLP’s caseload. An SLP without OMD training needs to take a closer look into why their patients may not be improving towards their speech articulation or feeding goals. This course will provide information to help the SLP differentially diagnose their patients to help connect the pieces and look beyond the symptoms to possibly a greater problem. As an SLP it is important to recognize the causes and symptoms of OMDs. This course will discuss the etiologies to OMDs including thumb/finger sucking and other oral habits, abnormal swallowing patterns (tongue thrust), tethered oral tissues (lip and tongue tie), abnormal tongue/lip resting postures and how OMDs affect speech articulation and feeding patterns as well as craniofacial and dental growth patterns.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this webinar participants will be able to:
1. Recognize the common causes and symptoms of orofacial myofunctional disorders.
2. Identify the necessary components of correct oral resting posture.
3. Identify how craniofacial growth patterns are influenced by orofacial muscles and airway.
4. Identify how a tongue tie can impact speech and feeding goals.
5. Identify patients who would benefit from orofacial myofunctional therapy.
