Abstract: This is a primer presentation on gender affirming voice training for transgender and nonconforming (TGNC) people. It will demystify the meaning of cultural humility and responsiveness, how to do a thorough intake, and TGNC voice assessment. The presentation will address the basics of training of the vocal (pitch, resonance and inflection), verbal, and nonverbal parameters sought by clients for gender affirmation and meeting unique, individual goals, in addition to assessing readiness for exit from training. Voice samples and cases will be presented and discussed throughout the presentation. Participants will have a generous amount of time to discuss topics and ask questions at the end of the presentation.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this webinar the participant will be able to:

  • State the important aspects of a thorough intake with a transgender/gender diverse client.

  • List appropriate baseline measures for a transgender/gender diverse client.

  • Plan and execute an appropriate training program for a transgender/gender diverse client.

Sandy Hirsch, MS, CCC-SLP, has an international reputation as an expert in gender affirming voice training (GAVT). She has co-edited/authored three editions of the Plural’s textbook on the topic (Adler, Hirsch & Mordaunt, 2006, 2012; Adler, Hirsch & Pickering, 2019). She teaches a workshop annually to voice clinicians interested in working with GAVT. Her work has been featured across all media, and ASHA’s Perspectives. Ms. Hirsch is a presenter at Moving Trans History Forward, Esprit, and Gender Odyssey, as well as ASHA, CPATH, the Voice Foundation Symposium, Northwest Voice Foundation, VASTA, Fall Voice, and the Art and Science of Performing Voice. She has lectured at the UW, WWU, and SUNY New Paltz. Ms. Hirsch’s practice, Give Voice, serves a range of corporate communication areas and ESL accent modification. A marriage of theater, singing, clinical voice, and languages gives her a rich perspective on communication training, as well as diverse cultures and personalities.
