Title: Tongue-Tie: The Tip of the Iceberg Part 1: The What, So What, Why, and How To Treat It
Abstract: Tongue tie and other oral restrictions can negatively impact children's articulation and feeding patterns, is associated with craniofacial underdevelopment, poor oral dysfunction, poor oral rest posture, dysfunctional breathing habits, poor sleep quality, and even obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Santiago will provide a tongue-tie surgeon's perspective on tongue-tie - why it is important to recognize it and treat it. Participants will learn how to functionally assess restrictive oral tissues and the resulting compensation patterns, as well as gain insight into the appropriate surgical approach and its benefits.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Describe the etiology of tongue-tie, its prevalence, and why to treat it.
Report the red flags of the comorbidities associated with tongue-tie and the resultant craniofacial underdevelopment, poor oral dysfunction and poor oral rest posture.
Explain how to functionally assess for all restrictive oral tissues and their compensation patterns.
Describe what do if you have found the restriction? Who do you refer to? Why is it important to know the surgeon?
Report the nuts and bolts of the functional frenuloplasty surgery: the before, during, and after.
