Supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults and Children: What Every SLP Should Know

Abstract: This presentation is aimed at providing Speech Language Pathologist relevant information that they can incorporate into their everyday practice. This session cover an array of topics and will provide information on managing hearing loss, troubleshooting various hearing assistive technologies, hearing conservation and considerations for working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults and children. This course is targeted towards SLPs that would benefit from a pertinent update on hearing and hearing technology.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the course learners should be able to:

  1. Understand different types of hearing assistive technologies

  2. Apply a systematic approach to troubleshooting a wide variety of hearing assistive devices

  3. List appropriate accommodations for home, community and classroom for D/HH individuals

Biography:

Kevin Peterson, AuD is an Outreach Audiologist at the Washington Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth where he serves students and families in Riverview and Snoqualmie Valley school districts. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University in 2013 and his Doctorate in Audiology from Pacific University in 2018. His previous clinical experiences were largely focused on cochlear implant and bone anchored implant evaluations and programming. Kevin’s area of professional interest is focused on family access to high-quality pediatric and cochlear implant care.
